On Saturday,
Extreme Events MN
nearly 300 competitors
entertained thousands of spectators,
with a IMPRESSIVE event at Canterbury Park
in Skakopee, Minnesota.
The venue is unique in many ways.
Horses ran on the outside of the straight, wide race track,
built with pristine man-made snow.
Skiers and snowboarders wove across the course
collecting rings set along the outside rails.
They often met in the middle to navigate shared rollers and jumps
including one at the end launching them over the finish.
This format was incredibly exciting to watch
especially, in the snowboard division,
which was akin to watching a snowboard cross event
since the running of the horses and boarders was equally paced.
A 10 foot freestyle jump and landing slope with a gap between
was built in "center court" on which both skiers and snowboarders each
got three attempts which were judged. The highest combined score won.
Another unique feature of Canterbury Park's event is that after each competitor
has run once, only the top four teams in Novice and Snowboard and
the top six teams in Open/Pro advance to a second round.
The winners are determined by a combined score.
The assigned indoor and outdoor covered bleacher seating
protected onlookers from the mid-West cold,
but it was relatively mild for February and the sun shone bright so
there were plenty of folks gathered around the bonfires
at track level as well..
Skijor USA was able to watch from the announcer's box
for a portion of the event, offering a dizzying bird's eye view of the action.
From "court side", Loren addressed the crowd with a summary
on the sport's rich history and aspirations to return to the Winter Olympic Games.
The announcement was met with a roar of applause.
CONGRATULATIONS
to organizer, Ted Slathar, announcers, Kelly Kenney and Jason Hetland,
volunteers, sponsors, competitors
and Canterbury Park staff
on a TOP SHELF event!

Despite challenging snow conditions,
Skijoring the Big Rock
pulled off a colorful, highly competitive event
in Boulder, Montana.
Close to 100 teams participated across five divisions
and a costume contest was held
as evidenced in the amusing photographs above.
The folks in Boulder were only able to successfully hold their event
with the Herculean efforts of community members
who hauled snow in for skiers and created a safe track
for horses by adding and raking sand into the dirt.
The cold temperatures kept both skier and horse tracks intact and manageable.
Congratulations to Boulder's organizers and crew
on a job well done!

Enthusiastic crowds gathered at the Rodeo Grounds in
Pinedale, Wyoming
for an event that just keeps growing!
A few years ago this race had humble beginnings
as a one day, local event during Pinedale's Winter Carnival,
but now it stands alone spanning a full weekend.
Attracting over 100 teams,
Pinedale ran a 3D format, replacing Sport and Novice,
with a one and a half second split.
Then organizers added Youth and Open on either end.

Topsham Fair
hosted their first ever skijoring event at their fairgrounds
in Topsham, Maine
An energetic community supported the 22 teams that competed
at this inaugural event, and it is bound to grow in 2023!
Topsham is a picturesque town of 9,000 people
which sits along a small estuary 27 miles north of Portland
and covers a little over 35 acres.

Steamboat Springs
continued their 100+ year tradition
of skijoring down Lincoln Avenue pulling eager children.
Efforts are in the works to have a broader competitive event
return to Steamboat in 2023.

~ UPCOMING EVENTS ~
President's weekend
is known for having multiple races
and this year is no different!
The lineup includes
three very well-established events
Silverton, CO
has held its event on Notorious Blair Street
since 2010.
The Town of Silverton is 1000% behind the event
which attracts over 2500 spectators.
Like Leadville, Silverton acts as a reunion of sorts for Colorado
competitors, so it will be good to see old friends again!

In Whitefish, MT
skijoring has been part of their Winter Carnival
since the 1960's.
At first, horses ran down Central Avenue,
but this changed when, according to skijor lore,
a man was nearly thrown through a window!
Like Silverton, Whitefish acts as a gathering place for Montana's
skijor community. We are so glad the event is on the 2022 calendar!

In Bellevue, ID
Wood River Extreme Skijoring Association
continues their rich tradition.
Competitors are encouraged to wear their best
Western and Ski attire!
This is a wonderful event where hundreds of locals
set out lawn chairs along the course.
The event looks like a snowy beach so bring your sun block!
A portion of proceeds supports the Wood River High School Rodeo Team.

Garden City, UT
is putting on their second event.
They are keeping it local and intimate for now,
but have hopes to grow the event in 2023.

Meeker, CO
has just announced that their event is cancelled in 2022
due to adverse track and snow conditions.
